Starting in 2015, non-credentialed tax preparers (not CPA's, enrolled agents or registered tax return preparers) are required to take the IRS annual filing season program which includes continuing education consisting of 3 hours of federal law, 3 hours of ethics AND annual filing tax refresher course/test which includes 6 hours of continuing education. However, credentialed tax preparers (enrolled agents and registered tax return preparers) have the option to only take the annual filing season program course to be considered at a higher level than a credentialed tax preparer not taking the annual course. This will allow the preparer to perform additional services for the client such as representing the client before the IRS. The requirement is 8 hours of continuing education consisting of 3 hours of tax/law updates, 3 hours of federal tax law, and 2 hours of ethics by an IRS CE provider for 2015 and 15 hours of continuing education consisting of 3 hours of tax law updates, 10 hours of federal tax, and 2 hours of ethics for the years 2016 and beyond. As a credentialed preparer (registered tax return preparer), I have chosen to take part in the continuing education. More information is available at the IRS site.
